Rights and Governance

Rights and Governance Programme: Empowering Communities for Justice and Equity

The Rights and Governance programme by POPI is dedicated to advancing the principles of justice, gender equality, and the rights of children and citizens within communities. The programme places a strong emphasis on building the capacity of Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and their networks, empowering individuals to actively engage with local government systems and platforms for access to essential information. At its core, this initiative seeks to amplify people's influence in decision-making processes and bolster their control over their fundamental rights, all in pursuit of achieving the collective goals of their communities.

Key Programme Objectives:

  • Promoting Gender Justice: One of the primary objectives of this programme is to foster gender justice. It does so by advocating for the rights and empowerment of women and girls within the community. This includes raising awareness about gender-based discrimination and inequalities and providing support to women in various aspects of their lives.
  • Child Rights Advocacy: The programme is deeply committed to protecting the rights of children. It actively intervenes in cases of child marriages, working to halt such harmful practices and ensuring that children have the opportunity to grow and thrive in a safe and nurturing environment.
  • Legal Support: To uphold the rights of women and children, the programme provides legal support when needed. This support is instrumental in ensuring that individuals receive the protection and justice they deserve.

Programme Achievements:

  • Awareness Raising for Women: Over eight thousand women have received comprehensive awareness-raising support through this programme. This support empowers women with knowledge about their rights, equipping them to advocate for themselves and make informed decisions that positively impact their lives.
  • Intervention in Child Marriages: A commendable achievement of the programme is its intervention in 53 cases of child marriages. By stepping in and stopping these harmful practices, the programme has safeguarded the futures of numerous young individuals, ensuring that they can access education and pursue their dreams.
  • Legal Assistance for Women: Additionally, the programme has provided legal support to 102 women. This support is instrumental in seeking justice for cases of abuse, discrimination, or other violations of women's rights, ultimately empowering them to lead more secure and dignified lives.

The Rights and Governance programme by POPI is a testament to the organization's unwavering commitment to justice, gender equality, and the well-being of children and citizens within communities. Through capacity-building, advocacy, and legal support, the programme empowers individuals to take control of their rights, fosters a culture of gender justice, and stands up for the protection and well-being of the most vulnerable members of society.
