Rural People’s Access to Congenial and Environment Viable Water and Sanitation Facilities (RACE)

National water and sanitation coverage in Bangladesh has been expanding steadily over the last years. However still there are pockets of areas that are lagging behind due to geographical and various socio economic reasons. The condition of WaSH infrastructures in the geographically challenging areas such as haor and chars are generally weaker than the mainland areas. Besides, due to extreme financial hardship many poor families all over the country with their all good intentions are not capable of installing tube well for accessing pure drinking water and hygienic sanitary latrines. On the other hand there is a section of people, even having adequate financial ability, do not install Hygienic WaSH infrastructure due to lack of right kind of perspective, awareness and motivation.

POPI for years has been conducting WaSH awareness building and demand creation activities for water and sanitation products through different projects. The RACE is one of the flagship projects that along with awareness raising and demand creation also extends credit to the community members for installing health and sanitation infrastructures.

The phase -2 of RACE project is being implemented in 21 Upazillas belonging to 7 districts namely Mymensingh, Kishoregonj, Netrokona , Gazipur, Narshingdi, Narayangonj and Brahmanbaria with partnership support from Water .org. RACE project offers water and sanitation credit and operates by following usual  micro credit lending terms and procedures with awareness raising, training , social mobilization and technical support. This project plans to extend water and sanitation credit to 15,000 families by September 2020. The main components of this endeavor include:

  1.  Awareness building and demand creation for sanitation and water infrastructure products
  2. IEC material preparation and dissemination
  3. WaSH capacity building
  4. Offer issue based training
  5. Water quality testing
  6. Loan product development
  7. Assessment and product design
  8.  Loan administration and financing
  9. Loan product implementation etc.
